Tinubu Launches Nigeria’s Largest Ever Housing Project: 77,400 Affordable Homes, Free Units for Widows

In a bold and transformative announcement for the Nigerian housing sector, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to officially inaugurate the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme—a flagship national initiative aimed at delivering affordable housing to all Nigerians, regardless of income or social status.

Speaking at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja, during a meeting with representatives of Creative Sphere Limited, Dangiwa emphasized that the programme specifically targets low-income earners, unemployed citizens, vulnerable populations, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from both the formal and informal sectors.

As part of this nationwide rollout, the Federal Government plans to build 100 housing units in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, resulting in an ambitious total of 77,400 homes to be delivered within the first year of the programme’s launch.

Describing the effort as “visionary,” Dangiwa noted that the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme reflects President Tinubu’s unwavering commitment to building “a better Nigeria, where even the most vulnerable can own a livable home.

To support this sweeping vision, the homes will be constructed under the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF). Beyond housing, each estate will feature integrated community infrastructure including a clinic, primary school, police outpost, recreational area, and shopping mall—essentials designed to foster vibrant, self-sustaining neighborhoods.

In line with the programme’s inclusive spirit, Dangiwa explained the affordability model, stating:

“Anyone earning as low as N30,000 per month will be able to purchase a house by paying N10,000 monthly. Similarly, someone earning N90,000 will pay N30,000.

Eighty percent of the homes will be sold to local residents based on this progressive income-indexed structure. The remaining 20 percent will be allocated at no cost to society’s most vulnerable—widows, orphans, and others who live on the economic margins.

The Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme is one pillar of the broader Renewed Hope Housing Initiative, which also includes the Renewed Hope Housing Estates and the flagship Renewed Hope Cities.

Dangiwa provided further insight into the cities project, highlighting that the Renewed Hope Cities are being developed under a robust Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model in seven key urban centers: Abuja, Rivers, Lagos, Enugu, Nasarawa, Kano, and Maiduguri. These cities were selected to represent the six geopolitical zones plus the FCT, underscoring the administration’s commitment to national equity in housing development.

Under the Renewed Hope Estates component, the Federal Government will construct 250 housing units in two state capitals from each zone, totaling 12 cities. These developments will be directly financed through the national budget with plans to scale up significantly throughout the year. This targeted expansion of housing aligns with both Global Real Estate Trends and domestic priorities in expanding access and affordability.

In response to a collaborative proposal from Creative Sphere Limited—organisers of the upcoming Real Estate Innovation and Investment Carnival—Dangiwa praised the initiative, calling it a “timely platform to amplify the Ministry’s vision.” The event, which will feature a carnival, roadshow, and awards night, is poised to spotlight Nigeria’s growing housing market and its role in the nation’s economic recovery.

Events like this provide the perfect stage to showcase Nigeria as one of the Best Places to Invest in Real Estate across Africa,” Dangiwa added, noting the importance of sector visibility and public-private collaboration.

Mr. Monday Ogedengbe, Chairman of Creative Sphere Limited, affirmed the company’s dedication to supporting the Ministry’s housing agenda. He said the upcoming event, scheduled for later this year, aims to celebrate and catalyze real estate’s role in national development, particularly through innovative and inclusive programmes.

Noteworthy initiatives to be unveiled at the carnival include the Association of Women in Real Estate, Youth Access to Homes, and a newly established Diaspora Investment Desk aimed at attracting foreign investment and engaging Nigerians abroad in national development efforts.

Also present at the meeting was Queen Fatima Abubakar Zara, crowned Queen of Real Estate and a certified Estate Surveyor, who received her title on February 14, 2025. Her presence underscored the growing intersection of influence, visibility, and expertise in the Real Estate Magazine Nigeria scene.
